Where did you eat lunch today?
Did you know that 80% of people eat at their desk? This is actually a factoid we spin out in pitches all the time. Stats are easy to throw around, and for us to believe, but if More or Less has taught me anything it is that stats deserve to be unpicked. So here it goes.
I first read the figure in this eye-opening 2016 article by the Guardian and what’s so alarming is while even tech titans like google want us to have better nutrition and work habits, the future of work that some members of tech communities are evolving towards is soylent – the futuristic meal replacement which takes its name from an (arguably creepy) sci-fi movie.
The original figure comes from a 2012 survey that has been variously packaged and unpackaged. It is actually that 81% of employees take no break whatsoever. Our read of this is that the ones that do 39% of people eat lunch at their desk.
While we might not all be ready to become monotone in our eating habits, in the meantime the data all points to the same thing - most people don’t stop working for very long during the day. When they do the break is often the walk to get the food from the canteen, the fridge or a food court.
It is a statement about how we work and how we live. Positively it can be that people want to maximize their productivity – but we are all growing more distracted and disconnected. I don’t know if we can eat well and consciously while looking at a screen. Do we miss the connection to people that is found from breaking bread together? At least some days and there are other days when we just need to quickly refuel, without waste.
RePlated wants to change the future of take away food (even if the idea of solyent doesn’t appeal). What we want for you to be able to do is eat your lunch wherever and however you would normally – but instead of receiving it in a single use container that you are handed your tasty treats in one of our reusable containers.
Once you have your food, if you’re not eating at your desk you’re most often going to be found in fairly close proximity to it, maybe in a breakout area, kitchenette or outside on a balcony or in a courtyard (if you’re lucky!) but on your way back to your desk you’ll be able to dispose of your container right next to where you are currently thoughtfully disposing of your food containers.
Vive la (reuse) revolution!!
